• Registration and Operation of NGOs in Thailand

A charitable organization may be registered in Thailand. Although many countries refer to a charitable organization as a "Non - Governmental organization" or "NGO", as Thai law does not permit per se the registration of NGOs, such an organizations are referred to as a Foundations.

Non - Thais can act as officers of a foundation, however, it is advisable to consider having at least one Thai nationality officer on the board to help with practical every day matters. A minimum of three board members is required in total. Police record checks are required for persons to be approved to act as officers of an NGO.

Foreign workers and volunteers working for the NGO's may also apply for permission to work in Thailand.

There is also a separate type of non - profit organization that may be registered in Thailand. This is called an Association, and is a membership group of persons sharing similar interests. An Association is more appropriate for sports organizations or other clubs of people.
